Steps to Sort, pack, move process
When we work with a client to assist them to sort, pack and move to a new home, we guide them through the following four steps.
STEP 1: SORTING
- Ask all family members to remove all their belongings from your home at their earliest convenience.
- I propose spending an initial 3 days with you in your home to assist you to sort out and reduce. I propose working in the following order:
- The outbuildings and then move into the far end of your home working through the bedroom cupboards and storerooms
- The kitchen and living area
- Your bedroom cupboards
This will give you the opportunity to spend time with and get comfortable with us before we move into the intimate space of your bedroom.
We would allocate two rooms in your home:
- One for items that we believe we can potentially sell and
- one for items that we feel are difficult to sell and we suggest donating.
The items that you intend to take with would remain in the place that they belong. Then:
Option 1: We complete this sorting stage without boxing anything that you are not taking with you. You can then invite your family members back to have a look through all items that you will not be taking to see if there is anything that they would like. They can then remove the item right away comfortable with the fact that you have made the decision that you will not be keeping it.
Option 2: We box as we go having given family members the opportunity to choose and remove any items that they want prior to the sorting process beginning.
My suggestion is that we do not remove items at this stage, but rather wait until all final decisions have been made on your entire home in order to do one removal of all items. Because we have the luxury of space we can do this without impacting your day-to-day activities by having these piles in your living space.
STEP2: FLOORPLAN & INVENTORY
Once details are finalized and confirmed for your new home we can move on to this step:
- Obtain either a copy of the floor plan of your new home or measure up the rooms of the new home in order to draw up a floor plan.
- Do a walk-through of your present home, getting an indication of which items of furniture you are wanting to take with you, which you are not sure of and which you intend to leave behind.
- Drawing up the floorplan using the measurements of your items of furniture in order to easily see what will fit and work in your new home.
- Finalize the inventory of items that will not be going with you and begin working on the best options for selling these items.
STEP 3: THE MOVE
In order to properly quote on your move, we will need to have finalized details, such as:
- The inventory of items to be move
- Sorting out of wardrobes and cupboards in order to accurately estimate the number of boxes to be packed and unpacked
It is at this stage that we will decide on which is the best moving company to work with.
We work on offering a full pack, move, unpack service where we would pack up the entire contents of your home, move them across and unpack all boxes. This means that we would hand over an unpacked home to you at the end of the move, with your toothbrush in the bathroom, your TV set up and working, your food in your cupboards and your bed made and ready to sleep in.
The additional services that we discussed that we can oversee would be:
- Painting of your new home
- Restoration of selected items of furniture
- Making up curtains for your new home
- Hanging of pictures in your new home – we generally arrange this for the day after the move
STEP 4: CLEARING YOUR HOME
The final step would be to arrange for the:
- Collection of all items allocated to go to charity
- If required, to remove items that we felt cannot be donated and need to be recycled or discarded
- Liaising and facilitating the sale of items that we believe have some value, discussing all pricing options with you prior to the sale being agreed on.
- Doing a final clean of your home in order to hand it over to the new buyer or an agent.
